Plants that will thrive in our colder homes | James Wong

Many species will thank you for turning the central heating down

It’s a time of year when plant shops seem to be flooded with many of my favourite old-school Victorian houseplants, which these days are thought of – paradoxically, thanks to the widespread adoption of central heating – as incredibly tricky to grow. As so many of these cool-climate species look incredibly exotic, we tend to assume that their decline soon after we get them home is down to our own failure to spoil them with the steamy jungle conditions we are convinced they must require.

I think it’s reassuring to know that the reality is usually the exact opposite. With the current energy crisis causing many of us to consider reducing how many rooms we heat, and the temperature across our homes generally being lowered to a level that’s decidedly chillier, some of these species could really start to come into their own.

‘After I die I can haunt it’: A portrait of a comedian with Archibald ambitions

In our series on artworks in Australian homes, Paul Verhoeven shows us the portrait that will forever wed him to his Magnum PI moustache

As an Australian who grew up around the arts scene, Paul Verhoeven – author, broadcaster, comedian – says being painted for the Archibald has always been a “secret, shameful ambition.” When he mentioned it in passing to his wife, the writer Tegan Higginbotham, Verhoeven says he expected her to laugh “but she really is wonderful like that, she’ll humour anything”.

He didn’t think much more of it.

Greedy Tories? That rings a (Steve) Bell | Brief letters

Conservative plutocrats | Politicians’ replies | Allotment radicalism | Tory ethics | Wild-camping Wombles?

Re Polly Toynbee’s article (Zahawi, Sunak, Johnson: this is rule by plutocrat. It’s like a stench that’s worse each day, 23 January), I used to put Steve Bell’s cartoons on the kitchen wall day by day. I stopped on 21 January 2011, with his skewering of David Cameron as an inversion of Marx, saying: “From each according to their vulnerability, to each according to their greed.” I despair that I still have no need to change it.

• Politicians have no need for a chatbot to reply to members of the public (Letters, 22 January); they have staff to do that. Working at the Department of Trade in the 1980s, part of my job was to draft replies for the minister. The recipient of one letter I had drafted complained later that it was a “masterpiece of non-answer”. When my boss saw this, he congratulated me on having “cracked it”.

New lease of life: how to make the most of a rental property

Not owning your own home doesn’t mean that you can’t make it marvellous, as this south Manchester apartment shows

Midcentury design classics paired with contemporary pieces; colour-coordinated objects on simple white shelving; art and textiles that add pattern to a space… That’s what you get when you walk into a creative couple’s home where imagination and style nous compensate for the lack of a generous budget.

The south Manchester apartment that artist Laurie Maun shares with partner Dominic Owen, founder of unisex clothing brand Heresy, and their newborn baby, Sonny, is an exercise in versatile living. Why some plants are worth a little extra effort

It’s tricky to care for, so why is the alocasia having a moment?

You will often find me enthusing about stunning, easy-maintenance plants that I can’t believe aren’t more popular. However, the irony is that many of the houseplants that have most captured the imagination of home growers recently have been the opposite: species that demand conditions which are incredibly difficult to replicate in the average living room. The ones I am receiving the most questions about at the moment are some of the trickiest of all, Alocasias.

As recently as a decade ago there were really only two commonly available Alocasia species, representing the toughest-growing examples of the genus that are able to survive the lack of light, heat and humidity of your typical home. However, in recent years the number has increased incredibly, with the plants reaching near cult-status among avid growers, many of whom are new to horticulture.

Planting the seed: the botanist who harnessed the arts to grow Melbourne’s botanic gardens

As he prepares to depart after 10 years at the helm, Tim Entwisle speaks of making the gardens ‘less introverted’ while staying focused on conservation

Every morning, Prof Tim Entwisle arrives at Melbourne’s Royal Botanic Gardens just after 7am, usually in time to see the morning sun stream through the oak tree lawn.

“At that time of day the light coming through them is just spectacular,” he says.

Loch living: a beautiful home on the banks of the Tay

A design journalist and her family had always relished their trips to Scotland, but when a field by Loch Tay went up for sale, their dreams became reality

In 2013, Jill Macnair and her husband, Neil, bought a field on the edge of Loch Tay in Perthshire. The loch is a long, narrow stretch of dark water flanked by the Ben Lawers mountain range. The area had made a lasting impression on the couple almost 10 years previously when Macnair’s father had led them on a cycling expedition that skirted the south side of the loch. “The beauty of the landscape hit us both,” Macnair recalls.

Years later – married with two kids and living in London – the young family were on holiday on the Isle of Mull when Neil saw an ad for a field with planning permission. “We weren’t particularly thinking of doing anything like this,” says Macnair, “but we had such lovely memories of the area. On the drive back home, we took a detour to go and see it.”
