10 Dollar Tree Jenga Block Crafts For Christmas

10 Dollar Tree Jenga Block Crafts For Christmas 10 Dollar Tree Jenga Block Crafts For Christmas

This roundup uses the Dollar tree Jenga blocks or the Tumbling tower blocks. These Jenga blocks have become so popular for crafting, that we knew we had to dedicate a whole post to just Christmas-themed projects. Due to the small size of these Jenga blocks, most of these crafts are for tree ornaments or magnets, but you can glue the tumbling blocks together for larger craft projects and Christmas holiday decorations.

You can buy the Jenga blocks here. Just $1.25 for 72 blocks.

One of my favorite crafts to make are the small Rae Dunn word blocks, you can use small round eyelet hooks for the hanging loop. Use a ribbon for a traditional look or use rustic twine if you are going for farmhouse decor. These are so inexpensive to make that you could fill a whole Christmas tree with these DIY Decorations.

Uniform thinking: inside the home of Older, the influential Italian designers

The sustainable Milan home of this cutting-edge design duo is all about rethinking the rules

We don’t believe it’s a job well done to take expensive materials and make something beautiful; we prefer using modest materials and putting a smile on people’s faces,” says Morten Thuesen of his and partner Letizia Caramia’s design sensibility. “Both of us are a little tired of hearing all these intellectual references – sometimes it’s just nice that a product can ‘be’.”

Taking centre stage in the couple’s home in the storied Porta Venezia district of Milan is their affectionately named Carolino, meaning little trolley, which the pair made from leftovers in Caramia’s parents’ workshop during a Christmas lockdown when they wanted a wheelie tray to carry food and drinks between rooms. Beside it stands the stools they conjured at the same time from plywood and construction pillars. If it sounds like a high-achiever’s version of Jenga, then it’s an endearing one: the pieces took pride of place in their exhibition at the first post-pandemic Salone del Mobile fair at the showcase’s hotspot venue, Alcova, in 2021 to critical acclaim.

Keir Davidson obituary

My friend Keir Davidson, who has died aged 74, was a landscape designer and author. His books range from the history of Zen gardens in Japan to an account of Coleridge’s groundbreaking Lakeland fell walks in the early 19th century.

Born in London, son of the distinguished African historian and radical journalist Basil Davidson and his wife, Marion (nee Young), a Jungian psychotherapist, Keir attended St Paul’s school, London. His gap year was spent in Zambia teaching civics to high-school students, followed by four years at Leeds teacher training college. In 1973, he moved to the Welsh Marches to help a friend restore an abandoned 14th-century building. There he began garden and construction work, while in the evenings playing guitar with his band in local pubs.

A writer’s colourful home has a story to tell

Bold shades and open spaces add lots of character to author Huma Qureshi’s 60s house

I cringe when people say it’s colourful,” says award-winning author Huma Qureshi. She’s perched on the edge of a blue sofa in the front room of her four-bedroom north London home, where she lives with her partner, Richard Birch, and their children. “It’s not! It’s considered. It’s intentional.” The floor tiles are a faded terrazzo yellow and the walls are pink, with pale green architraves framing the doorway leading into the kitchen-diner. In this home, neutrals serve as accent colours. There isn’t much white, grey or beige in sight, but she’s right, it’s not colourful, it’s brilliant. Behind her a collection of seven patterned wall plates hang next to the cover artwork for her 2021 memoir. “My friend Parul Arora did the cover for the book and she gave me the print,” she says. “These are my take on the plates my mum would buy on her travels and hang up in our family home. It was the sale of that home that led us to this house.”

Huma’s mother was downsizing from their family home in the Midlands and moving to north London to be closer to her children. This was during lockdown in 2020 and she wasn’t able to view houses, so they did it for her. “I saw a tired-looking house and half jokingly showed it to Richard, who is used to me sending him pictures of properties we could never ever live in. He said this actually looks interesting,” says Huma. They went to view it and she distinctly remembers that they were both struck by the light and the big windows on both sides, plus the spacious rooms. “At a certain point in the afternoon the sun comes into the house from the back and front, filling the centre so it glows. There were slices of sunlight coming through and it felt like a summer house. On holiday in Denmark, we fell in love with these traditional, black-painted summer houses and when we saw this place, we immediately knew we’d paint it black on the outside, too.” This is also why she decided on faded terrazzo floor tiles. “It’s as if they’ve been washed out by the sun over time and have been there for years.”

15 DIY Dollar Tree Pizza Tray Christmas Wreaths

15 DIY Dollar Tree Pizza Tray Christmas Wreaths 15 DIY Dollar Tree Pizza Tray Christmas Wreaths

This roundup is all about making a Holiday Christmas wreath. unlike traditional Christmas wreaths, these DIY wreaths do not use a hoop or wreath form, instead, they are made using a $1 Pizza tray from Dollar tree or similar stores.

I don’t know who came up with this idea originally but using a metal tray as the backing piece to your wreath (or any other round craft) is genius. I love when crafters and DIYers source crafting supplies from the most unusual places, and often these supplies are much cheaper than a Craft store base.

Some of these DIY Pizza pan or Pozza tray wreaths use paint and Christmas craft picks, such as flowers or bows, but a few use an SVG to create a face or a Christmas holiday quote.  If you do not have an SVG or Cutting machine, don’t worry You can still make these wreaths. You will just have to handprint or stencil the design onto the metal pizza tray.

One of the easiest ways to paint a pizza tray is using spray paint. It goes on easy and stays on. I like using Krylon spray paint, but you could use whatever brand you like.  Acrylic paint will go on, but you will need to seal it to make it a little tougher as in my experience they scratch really easily with normal craft paints.

Use a Dremel drill to create a hanging hole at the top. Pizza trays are really easy to cut through.

I can not find the original source for this image, but it is another great example of a DIY craft. This pizza tray has been decorated with a pair of children’s gloves and a scarf to create a beanie.

Here is a video tutorial for making the pizza pan Snowman

The era of cheap orchids could be over | James Wong

A moth orchid grower shuts up shop, one of many vast scale plant providers debilitated by energy price spikes

A few weekends ago, visiting one of my botanical buddies over in the Netherlands, I was taken on the most eye-opening nursery visit of my life. During lunch he announced, with characteristic Dutch directness: “Do you want to see a room of 2m orchids? You should take pictures, as after this winter this will only be seen in history books.” With an offer like that, who could say no?

A short drive later and we were sliding open the doors of one of the largest moth orchid growers in Holland, who had announced only earlier that day that they were shutting up shop after decades in business. Glasshouses the size of football pitches had been entirely emptied, the plants having been evacuated to smaller sections to save heating costs. A good 10-minute walk through abandoned corridors, I stepped into a misty room – easily double the size of the baggage claim halls of most international airports – where tables of closely crammed plants sat in full, dazzling flower.

Why climate crisis means some English roses will bloom no longer

Award-winning rose varieties are being retired due to changing garden conditions and evolving pests

Think of the quintessential English garden and a rose will invariably spring to mind. Their sweet scent and plush petals have long been prized by gardeners, but now some of the most beloved varieties are being retired by growers due to climate breakdown and pests.

Though their use in gardens is thought to have originated in China and Iraq, for hundreds of years they have been a prize bloom across England. And the undisputed king of rose-growing in the past six decades has been David Austin, who died in 2018 but whose roses fill gardens all over the country with their colour and intoxicating smell. His company, which is still going, has said it is to retire some of its most well-loved species because they are no longer practicable to grow.

Autumn Colors on our trip to Quebec

Hello everyone, I can't believe October is already over. It has been very warm here and even now we were still able to do some outdoor painting which never happens here in November. This year on the Island we didn't have a lot of fall foliage after Fiona stormed through taking down lots of big trees and blowing the leaves of many others before they had a chance to change their colors. So,

Why ivy is here to help gardeners – and homeowners

It has a reputation for being destructive, but that’s so unfair

Scrolling through my social media feed recently, I was stopped in my digital tracks by a truly jaw-dropping image. It was a leafy mountainside in Shengshan, China, where what looked like well over 100 houses were entirely wrapped in living green. After being abandoned in the 1990s the fishing village of Houtouwan, 40 miles east of Shanghai, had been swallowed by nature, with Boston ivy covering every possible surface – roads, multistorey buildings, old gardens, the whole lot. It was like a model railway scene dusted in emerald icing sugar. It started me thinking of the buildings I see dotted round me in London covered in this exact same vine, and the incredible impact this could have if climbers like this were planted across our cities.

Aside from the magical aesthetic appearance, we now know that healing times in hospitals can be shorter for patients looking out at green views than for those looking out on brick walls. Exercising in green spaces not only feels easier, but can even burn more calories per session, for a range of complex reasons we have yet to fully understand. In a densely populated urban environment where space is at a premium, greening vertical surfaces is a really neat way of adding enormous amounts of nature without taking up any extra land footprint.

10 DIY Crafts Using Shovels

10 DIY Crafts Using Shovels 10 DIY Crafts Using Shovels

This roundup is all about shovels, who would have thought so many different things can be made using them?  Some of these crafts use plastic shovels from the Dollar store but you can use metal garden shovels and upcycled thrift store shovels too.  As most of these tutorials are for making your shovel look old, recycled shovels with rust on them would be perfect!

I especially love the project using the upcycled shovel handles, cause I have broken a shovel in half quite a few times trying to dig out a root system, so this would have been a great way to use them up.

Another great reason to use upcycled shovels is they are perfect for decorating the porch, inexpensive and they are weatherproof (depending on the paints you use)

For the snowman project, you will need the following supplies to be able to make it.

snow shovel, white paint, black paint, orange paint, 2″ paint brush, .5″ paint brush, 1″ round sponge brush, red ribbon or fabric strip.
