How To Make A Faucet Cover To Prevent Your Pipes Freezing

How To Make A Faucet Cover To Prevent Your Pipes Freezing

Not sure if you noticed but it is a bit cold in places at the moment, Winter is no big deal, unless you know you haven’t had one for 70+ years.  Are you scrambling to winter-ize your home and prepare for the chill?

Here is a tutorial by Clumsy Crafter,    On how and why you should be wrapping your pipes with her homemade Facuet cover.

Hunker also has a tutorial to show you how to make your own faucet cover.

For my tutorial I am going to suggest you find an old oven mitt from the kitchen, I mean who uses those things for the actual oven anyways? (not me). Open up the insulated mitt and wrap the tap in the mitt, If you have a little extra time on your hands, you can sew in some ties so that you can wrap it around your faucet to prevent the water freezing.

When the weather is very cold outside, let the cold water drip from the faucet served by exposed pipes. Running water through the pipe – even at a trickle –

The dripping faucet should be as far away from the water source as possible so the water will flow through the entire length of the system. If you aren’t sure where the incoming water source is located, setting any faucet to drip will help. A common misconception is that the drip prevents water from freezing because it stays in motion when it’s running through the pipes. Although this helps, the truth is that at extreme temperatures water can freeze even while it is flowing. The real reason a dripping faucet can help prevent pipes from bursting is that the constant drip relieves pressure that is building up in the pipes between the ice blockage and the faucet, and helps to prevent them from bursting when the pipes begin to thaw.  (Source)

Still have some time to prepare for the big chill? Check out these Faucet covers to help protect taps outside.

5 DIY Space Heaters To Heat Your Home In An Emergency

5 DIY Space Heaters To Heat Your Home In An Emergency

Let me start by saying that these tutorial for making your own emergency space heater are just that, emergency heaters, do not use these for everyday life. However, if you are without power and freezing your arse off this my friends is not only the perfect solution it may well be the only solution to staying warm with no power. If you still have delivery then grab a kerosine heater which does not require power.  Make sure your Carbon monoxide detectors are working! Literally, go and check right now!

Three of this diy space heaters use terracotta plant pots, so hopefully, you already have one of those in your garden. Literally, tip out the plant and wash it if that is all you have.  The last one uses cans from the cupboard to create a candle, which of course creates heat.

Steel Can Heater/Stove! the ‘Cotton Ball’ Heater/stove! – Easy DIY

If you do not have a terracotta plant pot perhaps you have a large ceramic oven pot to use?.  You will need a source of fire, in all of these diy tutorials candles are used to create the space heater.

Before turning on or lighting up your space heater make sure you have closed off the space to the outside air. It might sound silly but staying warm in winter when you haven’t had a winter snowstorm for 70 years you may just not know the secrets to stay warm.

Close off all the windows, use towels to close door frames, close all the curtains and windows. If you have extra bedding or sheets (that you are not under) tie them up against the window to insulate your home.  Make sure you are wearing socks, beanie, gloves, layers of clothing are warmer than a single pullover. If you have gas cooking then cook your dinner late at night before the temperature drops and use the heat from your cooking to warm the house.

See those cushions on the couch? Time to make a fort with the kids (do not put fire in your fort) Bunker down in a couch igloo for the night and keep the body heat trapped in your winter fort. Close off rooms you do not need to use or heat. Camp out in a room without windows at night to help keep the outside cold air off you, sleeping well at night will help you to move around and stay warm the next day. Sleep well, stay warm and stay safe.

Amazing New Range Of Mom Lego

Amazing New Range Of Mom Lego

Lego has brought out some amazing new designs in the past year and this Lego bouquet is perfect! Okay, I know my post says MOM lego, but of course I do not need to tell you that this lego is actually for Anyone.  I am so excited, during lockdown I tried my hands at puzzles but found it boring and of course FLAT.  But helping my son with his Star wars lego was boring too. It really did not appeal to me in any way. I am totally in love with this though!  Would make a wonderful Mother’s day gift too!
