Apartment composting: 'More challenging than what you read on the back of the box at Bunnings'

Anyone can compost with enough time and commitment, but for the time-poor or commitment-phobic, Australian local councils may have a solution

On paper, composting seems simple. But in reality, it can open up a whole can of worms. For Andrew McCarthy, that can was specifically 20,000 dead worms, and “the stench of ammonia” after a five-day trip down the coast.

McCarthy, who is chairperson of the South Melbourne Sustainability Group, discovered worms do not fare well in direct sunshine. The heat essentially cooked them.

In the quietest times, the garden consoles

Early bulbs and late bloomers offer distractions over lockdown

Spring shoots, like a dead man’s hand. The first narcissi have broken through their winter grave. A pot full of fingers, reaching for the future. Hope is buried here.

My first bulbs were hyacinths, dangling over water in clear glass, a gift for mothers from primary school. Blue for boys, pink for girls. Much later I grew amaryllis. We don’t have indoor plants any more, but there was once a living-room glade of fig and yucca. My daughter Kala has them now, every few years a more extravagant pot to fit them in. She has the gift of it.

DIY heart-shaped frame

Have fun making a heart-shaped photo frame with paper in less than 10 minutes. This easy papercraft is perfect to frame your favorite pictures.

There are 2 size templates available: one for 4×6 inches photos and one for smaller pictures of 4 1/2 x 3 1/2 inches.

This craft is super easy to make, you just have to print the template on cardstock and you can start making your paper photo frame.

You can make the frames in any color you like. For a better result, prefer using cardstock paper. You can also decorate the frame with stickers and letters.

It’s well documented that 2020 was the year of making our personal spaces more beautiful. Whether it was a balcony, backyard or rooftop, we got busy kitting out our outdoor space with chairs and tables, pot plants of all sizes or cute new greenhouses that fed our newfound gardening addictions.

So fast forward nine months and half a summer later and how is it faring? Has the timber started to fade? Is the rip-off plastic Adirondack chair that looked sturdy online turned out to be lighter than you expected, about to take off in the next stiff southerly? Are your outdoor cushions mouldy from all this season’s rain?
