‘There’s a lot more out at night’: a beginner’s guide to spotlighting
In lockdown there are few things more thrilling than traipsing into the dark looking for animals – in Australia, at least
I was about 10 when I first locked eyes with a sugar glider. I caught its eyes shining through the fog that our breath sent wisping across the torchlight. I remember it being tiny, soft and, true to its name, the sweetest thing I’d ever seen.
My father remembers that ranger-led walk up Black Mountain on a Canberra winter evening a little differently: “I don’t think we saw anything.”

20 Fall Mason Jar Crafts To Decorate Your Home
Fall and mason jars go together like your fingers and hot glue. Mason jars have to be one of the most popular items to recycled and re-use.
Often mason jar crafts imply that you need to use actual Mason jars, but the truth is you can use any jar, any sauce, baby food or pickle jar will also work for these DIY Fall crafts. The whole purpose of recycling is to use items that you already have and to prevent them from going into the bin. Of course, if you don’t have jars, maybe consider asking around to friends and family to see if they have any mason jars or glass jars that you can use for crafting.
Check out these recycled jar crafts on our Recycled Crafts blog
You could even repay their gifting of empty mason jars by making a little craft project out of one for them.
I have to say I am in love with fall and jars, it’s such a clear reminder of pickling food and storing up for the winter.
I think the very first jar craft I did, was for my 21st Birthday party. I spray painted the inside of jars with silver paint for a glass finish and filled them with either flower or maybe balloons, it has been a while now so I don’t quite remember. Now I have a stash of recycled glass jars with jute ribbon on for basically every occasion, cause jute goes with everything.

Chef’s London home merges West African, Japanese and Scandi influences
Given that chef Carine Ottou moved from place to place so much as a teenager, then as a student and then also during her early working years, it’s no surprise that the idea of home has taken on a particular sense of importance for her. She grew up first in Cameroon, but then moved to France at the age of 14, where she finished school and started university. That was followed by time living and working in Ireland. So by the time Ottou and her husband Jacob, whom she met in Dublin, decided to settle in London they were both ready to put down some roots.
“Home is really important to me, not just for my own family but also for my cooking and my work as a chef,” says Ottou, who runs cooking classes and hosts a supper club at her home in Brixton. “Having moved around so much, ‘home’ became something that I really wanted to recreate with a place where we just feel at ease. It’s definitely influenced by my background and combines many different parts of it. But it was also really important that when people come to the house, they would feel welcome.”

A clean sheet: small changes around the house can make a big difference in lockdown
With so many Australians still disrupted by the pandemic, home improvement projects can restore a sense of control
I have grown tired of my one-bedroom apartment. It started last year, when we were first plunged into lockdown. As it turns out, a bedroom, bathroom and living area is a very small space to share with a partner 24/7.
The build-up to claustrophobia was gradual – at first, spending chunks of time at home surrounded by my things felt novel, comforting even. Then the familiar became overly familiar. So we bought new cushions, swapped our coffee table and organised the linen closet. Those stopgaps worked.
