We decided to become a shoes-off house. It was more complicated than I thought

We are still in the beginning of our new shoeless lives, but already there is no turning back

“Shoes off!” barked my slightly bossy friend Kit as I was about to cross her threshold. I was taken aback: was this a new habit adopted from social media or some lifestyle guru?

Kit is not obsessive, but she is house proud. She lives in the country, her house surrounded by muddy lawn near a beach, so it makes sense not to drag dirt on to her beautifully polished parquetry or scratch it with sand. She goes about barefoot year-round: slippers are not her style. She keeps a pair of rubber slides at the back door for putting the bins out, or going to the veggie patch.

Don’t go up the wall: how to pick paint colours for your home

Having prepared paint for The Block’s contestants, I understand the pressure to achieve interior design perfection. But choosing colours need not be excruciating

“We offer 15,000 whites. Pick any three.”

I more often give this advice to female clients, since in 40 years restoring, colour-matching and consulting I’ve seen most domestic decor decisions made by women. Apart from any cultural aspect, studies of human biology suggest a reason: only one in 200 women is colour-blind compared with one in 10 men (even more, I suspect, are partially afflicted). Tetrachromacy – the ability to see a far broader range of colours – is also only found in females.

20 of the UK’s best gardens to visit

From a castle in Cumbria to a subtropical paradise in Cornwall, these are some of the top unsung gardens across the country

In the dash for Cumbria’s lakes and fells, the area’s other green attractions can get missed. On Knipe Scar, at the edge of the Lake District national park, Lowther’s acres sprawl around the shell of a ruined 19th-century castle. Wildflower meadows, bee-friendly tree hives and rambling woodland contrast with a parterre, sculptured hornbeams and a Sleeping Beauty-inspired rose garden designed by Dan Pearson. Bikes and ebikes can be rented for pootling around the estate’s trails or perhaps a five-mile cycle to Ullswater. There is a Lost Castle adventure playground and a cafe. Before leaving, visit the west terrace for views across the Lowther valley to distant fells. Open daily, adults £15, children £10, lowthercastle.org

‘A gardener’s dream itinerary’: a tour of Carmarthenshire, the Garden of Wales

A road trip is the perfect way to explore the county’s horticultural highlights, with great places to eat, drink and stay en route

Driving the back roads of Carmarthenshire in spring, beneath broad oaks, over little stone bridges and along stretches of fertile woodland, windswept peatland and flowery meadows, I was reminded of the rudimentary treasure maps I loved drawing as a child. The ones composed of contrasting, caricatured environments spaced neatly within the concise contours of a fictional island, say, bearing labels like Wild Wood, Barren Bog and Misty Hills. Enticing though these untamed landscapes are, I’m in search of a different kind of bounty.

Beyond its green, green hills, castles, beaches and historic market towns (not least Dylan Thomas’s Laugharne), Carmarthenshire is also considered the Garden of Wales – which was news to me, despite family ties to the area. I’ve visited some of these botanical highlights over the years, such as Aberglasney Gardens for their tonal variety and the National Botanic Garden with its astounding glasshouse.

Plantwatch: Why dandelions should be left to grow in spring

These simple flowers, which bloom earlier than many others, are a rich source of nectar and pollen for insects

Dandelions are often seen by gardeners as burly thugs, but they do have their benefits. The flowers are rich in nectar and pollen, feeding pollinating insects, which have suffered steep declines in recent years. Numbers of flying insects in the UK have fallen by 78% since 2004, according to a survey based on sampling vehicle number plates. As dandelions bloom early in spring, before many other flowers, they are a particularly valuable food for hungry pollinators, with dandelion nectar especially vital when early pollinators such as wild bees, honeybees and hoverflies emerge.

Dandelion plants are particularly adept at thriving in urban places and can even grow in cracks in pavements, using a long, large taproot to tap into water and nutrients well below the ground surface. Urban dandelions grow bigger and better than those in the countryside, thriving in the warmer urban climate . Some species of dandelions can even tolerate the high levels of salt sprayed on roads in winter to help melt ice, and withstand roadside pollution from traffic.

RHS ambassador for communities quits, saying he was made to feel a ‘nuisance’

Tayshan Hayden-Smith says Chelsea flower show celebrates ‘exclusivity over equity’ and he was naive to think he could bring change

A gardener and activist hired by the Royal Horticultural Society to help it reach out to younger and disadvantaged people has said its flagship Chelsea flower show celebrated “exclusivity over equity” as he walked away from the role.

Tayshan Hayden-Smith, 28, was asked in 2022 to become the charity’s ambassador for young people and communities. But now he says that after three years working with the RHS, he has lost hope that it genuinely wants to become more accessible.

Leave them hanging on the telephone | Brief letters

Cold callers | Children reading | Push on with mowing | Not so quick crossword | Biscuit break

Regarding dealing with cold callers (Adrian Chiles, 7 May), it’s irritating I know, but if you don’t mind your phone being inaccessible for a few minutes, why not say: “Hang on, I’ll go and get him/her”, and then leave your phone until the caller rings off? At least you will have wasted some of their day.
Robert Walker
Perrancoombe, Cornwall

• Re fostering a love of reading in children (Letters, 6 May), one of my fondest memories of my teaching career was story time in the infant class in a local village school. Most of the children came quite a distance on buses. They adored Michael Rosen’s poetry. There were many afternoons when it was home time and they would shout: “Please read another Michael Rosen one, Mrs Mansfield, the driver won’t mind waiting.” What a privilege to teach them.

The book covers a wide range of topics aimed at building self-reliance, including from-scratch cooking, food preservation, and raising backyard chickens. Pruett’s approach is far from daunting, emphasizing that homesteading doesn’t require an overwhelming time commitment. Instead, she provides easy-to-follow advice that allows readers to take actionable steps toward a more sustainable and fulfilling lifestyle. The chapters dive into:

  • Cooking from Scratch: Offering 126 recipes for breads, main dishes, and desserts.

Pruett’s style is approachable, practical, and encouraging. She is the perfect guide for both beginners and those already on their homesteading journey, offering a balance between traditional skills and the realities of modern life.

Her personal journey from a suburban house with no yard to a thriving 8-acre homestead in Central Texas adds a relatable and inspiring layer to her teachings. Her focus is on integrating these skills into busy modern lives, so readers won’t feel overwhelmed by the prospect of spending hours in the kitchen or garden.

In addition to practical advice, Creating a Modern Homestead offers real-life stories and experiences that make the book feel like a conversation with a trusted friend. How to create a more eco-friendly lawn: six things you can do right now, according to an expert

Grass lawns get a bad rap, but there are ways to make them greener. Our gardens expert shares his top tips, from cutting down on fertiliser to mowing less frequently

The best gardening tools: essential kit, chosen by experts

In an age of climate crisis, decreasing biodiversity and heightened awareness of water consumption, an immaculate, weed-free lawn is becoming as taboo as an outdoor heater. However, provided we take a more sustainable approach to their upkeep, embracing beneficial “weeds” and long grass, the lawn still has a place in our gardens.

I’ve got one; if I didn’t, the kids would take their shenanigans into the borders, which would be game over for beloved brittle-stemmed flowers such as lilies and irises. I’ve reduced its size, though, to probably the minimum necessary for maintaining this crucial equilibrium (if ever they demand a trampoline I’m screwed). At about 25 sq metres, the lawn occupies about a quarter of our little garden – enough to kick a ball down or race a scooter around.
