How to properly load a dishwasher: 'If you pre-rinse it might actually come out dirtier'
Should you pay attention to ‘not dishwasher safe’ labels? And what really belongs in the bottom drawer? Experts solve your family washing-up conflicts
If you still feel the sting of parental reprimands for barbarically stacking your plate in the dishwasher without rinsing it first, one good thing 2020 can offer is vindication. While everyone has their own methods, tricks and opinions on conventional wisdom, the misinformation around a machine that’s meant to make our lives easier has caused generations-long feuds – and water wastage.
Fact: You do not need to pre-rinse. Just scrape the solids into the bin, says Ashley Iredale, white goods expert at the independent consumer advocacy group Choice. Most dishwashers have inbuilt turbidity sensors that measure how much dirt is in the water from the first rinse cycle, so rinsed plates may fool the system. “If you pre-rinse everything, your dishwasher’s going to think that your plates are cleaner than they actually are, so it won’t wash as intensely and they might actually come out dirtier,” says Iredale. The food filter is there for a reason, he adds – simply remove and clean it once a month.

Christmas wishes for gardeners
Time to grab a few brussels and drop last-minute present hints
It’s 20 December, the day before the shortest day, when the nights are long and the sun is low and much gardening is largely redundant. Your last chance to pop to the vegetable plot to pick a few winter leaves or brassicas, cavolo nero or brussels sprouts – though the tops are superior for eating in my opinion – for Christmas dinner. Perhaps even unearth a few parsnips for roasting, if they are to your taste.
Nearly past time to get in a few late requests for presents. I will often ask the kids or other family for seed packets. As always, I also have my eye on the Brown Envelope Seeds gift boxes, perhaps Peas on Earth, the Purple Veg, maybe even the Brexit Box. But you will have to hurry, unless like me you also have a birthday soon.

Share a kit or bring your own plate: tips for throwing a zero-waste party
From asking guests to bring unused pantry items, to swapping chips for baguettes, there are easy ways to throw a party with less plastic
My favourite memories are always the festive ones in which we are surrounded by family and friends. Throwing a party is a chance to show your people that adopting a low-waste lifestyle can be fun.
There’s no shame in asking for help, either. In fact, most guests prefer to be given a task as it makes them feel useful and involved in the process.

Why moth orchids make perfect housemates
These little beauties even tell you when it’s time to water them
In the traditional, deeply nostalgic world of gardening, it’s amazing how quickly some things can change. When I was a plant-mad teenager back in the 1990s, the moth orchid, Phalaenopsis, was considered an unbelievably rare new introduction that cost a fortune and was only available in a few colours. Fast forward just a few decades and they are now sold for no more than the price of everyday bedding plants at supermarket checkouts and garage forecourts everywhere. But this immense spike in popularity is not without good reason, so here is my guide to getting the very best out of them.
Hailing from the shaded forest branches of the cool, highlands regions of southeast Asia, moth orchids are in many ways the perfect houseplant, as they are adapted to essentially the exact environmental conditions we humans like the most. In terms of light levels, temperature and humidity, if you are happy to sit and read in a particular spot wearing a T-shirt and jeans, they will love it there too. So, with these factors automatically ticked off by meeting our own needs, there are only three other things to bear in mind when it comes to spoiling these plants: water, fertiliser and pruning.

The magic of growing plants from seed you’ve collected
There’s a special kind of wonder in beginning at the beginning
A winter Sunday morning. Near biblical rain for, it feels like, 40 days. The pathways are saturated and water streams. The lowers plots are littered with random pools.
I am not keen on walking on the soil. I don’t want to impact or churn it. I am not looking to make mud. The chicories sit in small lakes. There is the slight air of Glastonbury. At least I didn’t bring a tent.
